How techno became the sound of protest in Georgia
Tbilisi's Clubs: A Haven for Progressive Movements
The Vibrant Club Scene
From its dimly lit dance floors to its pounding techno beats, Bassiani has become a symbol of Tbilisi's thriving club scene.
"Before, no one knew Tbilisi... Now, the world is aware of us and people come from all over to these clubs," says Tato Getia, Bassiani's co-founder.
The May Raids and Social Activism
In May 2018, Tbilisi's clubs faced a crackdown by police, sparking protests and a movement for social change.
"We dance together, we fight together," became the rallying cry as thousands marched on Rustaveli Avenue to demand their right to dance.
The raids also highlighted the role of clubs in promoting drug reform and LGBTQ+ rights.
Bass with a Cause
Bassiani is more than just a club. It's a hub for social movements, advocating for drug reform, women's rights, and LGBTQ+ equality.
"It's about basic human rights," says Getia. "It's about not having to spend your life in prison for a tiny amount of drugs."
Electronic Music as a Catalyst for Change
The rise of electronic music and techno in Tbilisi has played a significant role in fostering a progressive culture.
"It speaks to you," says DJ Kote Japaridze. "It can be produced cheaply in bedroom studios."
Hope for the Future
Despite the setbacks, Tbilisi's club scene remains resilient and hopeful.
"It's clear where we are headed," says Getia. "There is no way that tomorrow we will wake up and the mindset will be completely different."
The clubs have created a safe space for marginalized communities, promoting tolerance and understanding in a society still grappling with issues of homophobia and discrimination.
